Thanks for this post which is very good btw.:) Yea, for far too long there have been misconceptions in regards to this subject. The problem really is that everybody thinks they are better than everybody else. If that makes sense.....LOL Why can't we all simply get along? Shi'a, Sunni, hello we are all MUSLIM and that's what counts. I find it totally absurd with what's going on in Iraq and pretty much all over the world. Come to think of it, it's kind of a joke really. A sad joke!:O(

Thank you sister. That is one of the better posts I have read on the issue. I am very familiar with the Sunni/Shi'a thing as I am married to a Saudi and a lot of that runs in her family and Saudi society in general.

Like yourself I have major issues with some Shi'a belief, but I leave it at that. They are our Muslim brothers and sisters. Posters on my blog have called me a tool of Iran and other things because of this, but so be it.

If you dont mind I am going to link to this post on yours on my site.

 Allah Ma3akum.

I believe that we should leave any judging up to Allah and we should worry about our own actions/beliefs first.

It's important to understand one another and our differences so we can move past them and unite together inshAllah.

I have heard many myths of Shia. True or not true. It's not my problem, I treat everyone, regardless of their religious beliefs the same inshALLAH.

I'll be the first to admit I know extremely little about the Shi'a. They are very rare in this part of the world, and those few who are here keep very much to themselves. However, I recently read Reza Aslan's book "No God But God," who devoted a chapter to Shi'ism. One thing that struck me as possibly "unIslamic" about the Shi'a was Reza saying that only the Ayatollahs have the "inside access" to the secret meanings within the Qur'an; this being "unIslamic" in the respect of verse 3:7, where it says, in part, "He it is Who has sent down to thee the Book: In it are verses basic or fundamental (of established meaning); they are the foundation of the Book: others are allegorical. But those in whose hearts is perversity follow the part thereof that is allegorical, seeking discord, and searching for its hidden meanings, but no one knows its hidden meanings except Allah."

Perhaps you can shed some light on this subject?

JD: I think it's good to ask a Shi'a person, but for my two qursh, I'd just add that I'd take Mr. Aslan with a big ol' grain of salt.

In response to JDsg's question about ayatullahs and their inside access: First, Reza Aslan is hardly a good source from which to be learning about shi'a islam. I dont think he really has any credentials in the Islamic sciences. But with respect to your question, "Ayatullah" is simply a title given to a high ranking scholar. They have no "inside access" aside from that which comes with years of study and contemplation on the meanings of the Qur'an.

Sabir,

As a Shi'a, I wanted to thank you for posting this. At a time of such increased hostilities, intrareligious understanding is of grave importance.

One detail I think that is important about mut'a that was left out, is that the 'iddah period (the period a woman must wait before remarriage) for a woman is still required. If this is respected I don't think one can call mut'a prostitution in any conventional sense.

Salm alaikum

1. in Islam, there are no holy people. only god
2. marriage is divorceable, but between the next marriage 4 month waiting,('iddah(bet)) if pregnant (main reason for a marriage: children) and in youngest times after 4 month you can examinate if some one has hiv. without this "wait"- time marriage makes no sense.
so mut'a is fuhush (sex without marriage) and if someone pai for this, then its prostitution.
I cannot accept that shi'i "imams" sits in front of a table and make muta'a contracts every hour for the same women and different man. those guys are hustlers and abuse religion to legitimate prostitution for theire good. Those "Imams" feed themselves with stones from Hell... sorry, but it is really ugly, poor girls which slaved by clerics of "shi'a", unfortunatly there are alot of such slavery in this world, but not in the name of Allah, please !!!!

History:

Muslims made a lot of mistakes. Those mistakes was followed by more mistakes because of that first mistakes and so on....

Mistake nr.X, but important question: who should lead the Ummah(Halifa)?

some people belive(most sunn'i): only man of Ahl'beyt can reign (Familymembers of Muhammad(sav.))
other people belive(shi'a): only man from family of Ali(raa.) can reign.(also family of Muhammad(sav.)but only the line of Ali and not the line of Aisha)

Muhammed(sav.) said: Even if it is a black slave man (a nobody) who is leading you, so long as he is leading in the limits of Quran, i order all of you to obey him.

we should pay attention to history. because just 20 Years after Muhammed(sav.) muslims start to go back to Monarchy, which is forbidden in Islam by Mohammed(sav.) but trough new confessions of many scientist/theologists in the 8th. century for example Hanifa. the monarchy was officially legitimized, which was fight back by Muhammad (sav.) because it would distourb the equality of muslims, so that islam(Peaceing) is not possible.

A Halifa have to be voted by all muslims, every group of muslim votes a leader which can speak for his group, but this means that all have to speak the same "Language"...

Salam alaikum
